Hadley's Hope - Alternative by tigaer Hadley's Hope - Alternative by tigaer
This one was part of a short tutorial that is in the current issue of the Advanced Photoshop. It was quite a tight deadline so I used the plate I had from my "Hadley's Hope" project in 2010. In general it's a pretty rough pic. No time for too much detail. Nonetheless it looks not bad I think.

Anyway... the tutorial is about how to insert/replace a sky and make it complement the picture itself. This pic here was my personal approach with more photo/manipulation happening. The mag requested a little more painting so the pic here isn't exactly the one in the mag. More info can be found here: [link] and [link]

Update 081211: Due to print requests I added a print. It's now available.

I'm gonna give this picture the benefit of the doubt and say that this is located somewhere in Coruscant.

Hey! Would it be too much to ask if I can use this for a project I'm working on? It won't be edited or copied, anyway. =)

This is pretty awesome. It would've been kinda cool to see this in a legit Alien movie, but they had to nuke it from orbit. It was the only way to be sure.

I love looking at your future city designs. Ever since I was litte I was always fascinated
with pics of what future cities would look like. And I was always wishing that I could visit them
for real.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere where there aren't trees.
I love nature and I often say I wouldn't want to live in New York
because there's not enough green.

What inspires you when designing those towers?
I'm an architecture student and also a hardcore sci-fi fan, so when I look at those paintings what I typically see, are massive, heavy towers, with huge proportions. Probably this innate distopian view is a byproduct from early cyberpunk literature (Sprawl trilogy) or some movies (Aliens 2, Blade Runner), etc, but there are some other ways to think the futuristic architecture. I say this because there are some really nice architects with increasingly built works, using wide range languages: Kinect elements that create shape-changing buildings, parametric tools for solving complex shapes.
Anyway, very nice work, specially the light at the top of the building.

I admire architecture designers. I couldn't do what they do. Not only because i don't have the necessary backgrounds when it comes to the design skills. My pictures aren't much about the architecture. It's more the atmosphere i want to bring out. The buildings etc are of course inspired by movies, games etc. So i'm certainly not the most original artist for that. There are quite a few concept artists out there that have their roots in architecture and now create concept art for certain scenes in movies or games. So if you have a talent in architecture AND digital art mediums... it could be the start into a nice career. :)

Choosing the appropriate sky-photo is definitely important  I hate it when manipulators or 3D artists choose a sky that features a time of the day or weather that doesn't match the lighting on the scene, or they don't bother to flip it when necessary too (like it would be a sunset render or scene lit from the left, but the glowing sides of the clouds would be facing right because the sun in the photo is there etc :shakefist:)

Nice work, very serene :)

Agree. But it's not only making the sky sit right and making the lighting work. It's also matching the atmosphere of the scene to the implemented sky. Having the wrong approach to that can ruin the pic. I can't even tell how often I changed the sky textures in my work because my first approach didn't satisfy me. That little extra work can help a lot.

Hm. Ok.
