Laetitia Caelia by tigaer Laetitia Caelia by tigaer
This one is a sister-project to my 'The Undiscovered Country' picture: [link] and tries to show a little more of the world we discovered in the previous work.

The foundation was created with Vue and then post worked in Photoshop. The exotic hook-like mountain formation was done with z-brush. A lot of extra textures, touch ups and atmosphere additions went into the post process. It originally was done last summer for the E-On Environment Challenge. They should consider holding that contest in the winter months. My machine was stable but a 40hrs render within the hottest weeks of the year is simply a pain.

I decided to try myself on another camera mapping animation for this one. Again quite some time went into that endeavour too. More specific info regarding the picture and project in general, as well as the animation, can be found here: [link]

the exotic rock formation looks awesome O_O
Do you need a UV Map for vue to put on the rock material or you just load in the formations and put the material in vue on it?

sorry for the late reply. normally i just slam a basic texture onto the objects. i'm not the super expert when it comes to modeling/texturing. a usual rock texture gives me enough orientation for the photoshop work i usually add to my pics. =)

The 2d painting comes off as a little flat, but the animation is totally amazing. It really brings the piece to life. Great work man :)

You're my favorite 3D artist, ever. Been a huge fan for years - and details and depth of atmosphere like you show in this image are the reason why.

Yes I'm surprised my laptop hasn't literally melted from rendering on hot days, and believe me - they are awful in Australia :dead: Sometimes when my laptop is working hard on a Summer day, the underside gets too hot for me to touch, it's like putting your hand onto a metal surface that's been in the sun all day :rage: And sometimes it just overheats and shuts off - I lost almost 2 days worth of rendering because of that once :frustrated:

Anyway this is an interesting scene, the "normal" parts of the canyon look very realistic, and the rock spikes remind me of archways that have eroded and broken down in the middle. The closest one near the middle looks like an elephant seal leaping out :XD: And it makes you wonder the names they would be called by their discoverers if they were real

My laptop becomes hot from just watching movies on it. It gets worse when the dvd drive is active. Unbelievable how much heat these things generate.

Yeah the scene isn't really something special and it was quite a battle. But anyway... certain areas in it look really good. And the animation works good too.

Amazing! How long did it take to render those animations within AE?

The after effects work did not take too long. The problem there are the regular crashes you cannot explain. The animation render in Vue (the 3d part) took 4-5hrs to render or so. I invested probably 2 weeks into the animation.
