D³SCR!PTION

Lets imagine we're on a distant planet. Where some fighters train an air combat situation. Or is it no training? ;) We're on a very vulcanic active planet here and the environment is not the lifeform friendliest. Smoke and dust everywhere, which makes it hard for the crews to keep the fighters clean. The harsh environment is quite a challenge to the pilots too. Sudden engine deaths and other malfunctions require top pilots to survive there. A futuristic top gun scene. ;p

TECHN!CAL DETA!LS

This pic is basically a digital painting. Created with an intuos3 tablet. After i blocked in the shapes i added some rock textures to the mountains and surface to gain a glimpse of realism. I really like how the landscape turned out. Not too happy with other parts. But it's all something that helps in the learning process.

35hrs - intuos3 - 5000px wide - 290mb psd

This is really cool-- good use of atmostphere. As a crit, I'd trim up the sun a bit so it's more round.

Your rock texture is wonderful. What program did you do this in? I'm trying to work in Corel Painter, but I just can't get a rock texture. Did you make a custom brush in Photoshop?

Could have sworn I seen fighters like those somewhere before. The landscape in which this "training" takes place is vast and something that would also test the pilots mentally. It's a dangerious beauty that will only be enchanced with combat.

Beautifully inspirational and imaginative. Your point-of-view, perspective, and design all add motion to this image... it does not look like a still shot in my mind, no matter how many times I tell myself that nothing is actually moving. Well thought-out and structured landscape as well... beautifully harsh, very good attention to detail, everything contributes to the mood. The sun is a nice touch, looking exceptionally hot and destructive, the glare catching the smoke trail of the fighter at it's engine is perfect. I especially love how the horizon is not existent due to the smoke, dust, and fog that obscures any line between the apocalyptic ground and poisonous sky. An incredible feat. :+fav:

I have to say it: It looks like Mustafar from Episode III. Be offended if you want, but since I'm Star Wars geek I think that's fairly high praise.

It is just stunning.

naw i'm surely not offended since the mustafa scene was an inspiration. i would have loved to recreate the movie scene with my fighters flying through a canyon. lol but there's still a long way to go. :) glad you like the pic :)

A very appealing piece of digital art. But i have some constructive critisism:

Some of the digital painting is flawed. It seems blocky and the brush strokes are visable and really detract from the feeling of the image. There are many areas in the painting enhancements which look rushed or not very detailed. The mixture of textures shows the digital painting flaws.

Otherwise, nice colours and perspective.

rushed. i worked 5 weeks on that thing lol sometimes there's a point where you have to say 'stop' now... or you'll ruin it. the difference, to my tg/manip work, is that we're not looking at a clean 3d render. of course a render has to have clean edges etc... but a painting... there it's more about 'suggesting' shapes... instead of really detailing them out. when you're in an exhibition you're not going to see the full painting when you're 30cm away from the painting, you have to step back. so... on a screen... open the pic and fullscreen it. go back a meter or two... THEN you see the actual image like the artist wanted the viewer to see it. of course you're right. this is not a too detailed painting. partly because i'm not skillful enough and partly because it's not necessary to detail out everything to bring over/express a certain feeling. :salute:

ps: to the textures... well... every pro artist will tell ya: "it doesnt matter with what you work or how you work... as long as it works..." - and i think it works. ;p

Thanks for explaining, I was just expressing my views that it would be a good idea to blend in the painting a bit more, but your reasons are very valid (About the painting thing) :)

Excellent job though, I really am liking your new approach to art, rather than terragen renders, I was just trying to help with some possible constructive critisism (Which you dont see much of anymore :()

Sci-fi action, nice! So I often on DA I see very "quiet" sci-fi scenes, which are nice, but it's cool to see something reminiscint of a space adventure. Beautifully drawn, and I especially like those hour-glass-shaped spires in the background.

Yes I have to agree with everyone here, this is amazing but...like chiwou said (if I understood the German correctly) the lavaflow is a bit off. It's, I don't know, too linear, if that makes any sence, we're talking about a wild force of nature. Also it wouldn't be quite as liquified as you've made it, there would possibly be rocks flowing around in it and the surface should be a bit more crusty. I'm a Icelander so I've seen quite a bit of flowing lava in my short 18 years, I don't meen to be rude, I just wanted to help you to better a already great pic. If your lava is just as you like please ignore me, what do I know about how lava flows on other planets, your planets...the chemical structor of the lava could be totally different there than it is here, the same goes for the air...well I'll shut up now. Great pic :)
