This one is probably two years old. I did this one for a colleague of mine who worked on a scifi project at the time. They needed a vista for a specific scene and i tried myself on it. Unfortunately the project got canceled. I left this piece and took parts of it to create my ‘Red Dawn‘ project. I’m sure you recognize the mountains.

I didn't rework it and only tweaked the colors a bit. Just for fun submission this time. :)

Lovely sense of both surrealism and realism here, I like the odd shapes of the mountains. Nice colour scheme too. Looks cold!

This reminds me heavily of the Environment art done by Bungie for Halo Reach. The slanted mountain peaks especially so.

Amazing work with the detail. Almost like a real photo.

Do you think of what is possible from a geological sense when you draw mountains or do you just draw something that looks nice?

good question here. hm... i guess it's a mix of both. on the one hand my work seems always based on what we know from earth. on the other hand you can never say what the conditions and general geological history other planets are. so when you create other worlds you always have some nice creative freedom. :)

Looks good, the materials on the terrains looks very real. Everytime I try using image-based materials on terrains it appears tiny and repetitive when on "world - standard" and is too big and low-res on "object - parametric" (the two mapping modes I really ever use :XD:) But yeah, very realistic mountains.

Though my only critique is something I see a lot in matte paintings and Vue renders. The cloud-photo used in the sky shows the clouds are being lit from the right, but the planet lighting suggest the sun is on the left :O You'd better hope there are two suns ;)

lol got me. :D yeah the lighting up there isn't exactly right. :D but well yeah... there can always be another lightsource behind the camera. :D ;p but to be honest i guess i overlooked it here. slipped me somehow. normally i get it right.
